Yeshiva Administrators Silence Student Publications

According to senior security officials at Stern College for Women, Jeffery Socol, Director of
Facilities Management, instructed his staff to remove copies of The Commentator and The
Observer from distribution centers located throughout the Midtown Campus. The removal of the
papers coincides with Stern College's Open House for potential admissions candidates.Click for full story |
Syms Dean, Nierenberg Announces Retirement

Dean of Yeshiva's Sy Syms School of Business, Dr. Harold Nierenberg, last week announced his
retirement, effective this coming August. Citing the verse from Ecclesiastes, Nierenberg
explained that "for everything there is a time," and the soon-to-be seventy-five-year-old Dean
feels the time has come to end an eight-year tenure at Yeshiva University.Click for full story |
YU Museum Set to Move Off-Campus
By Jason Cyrulnik For years considered a perennial uptown campus staple, the Yeshiva University Museum is set to
move downtown this coming February. The Museum will become one of five institutions to
occupy the new Center for Jewish History, a facility devoted to Jewish scholarship, located at 5th

Netanyahu Delivers Series of Lectures to Yeshiva Undergraduates By Pinchas Shapiro On November 17th, Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a capacity
crowd in Yeshiva's Lamport Auditorium. The evening lecture served as the centerpiece in a
series of appearances made by the former prime minister over a five week span. Netanyahu
delivered the lecture Wednesday evening after spending the afternoon with honors students from

New Ownership for Grandma's Cookie Jar
by Matt Krieger Grandma's Cookie Jar, a symbol of the Yeshiva University campus, has been acquired by new
owners. Brothers Daniel and Steven Brody, originally from Miami, bought the venerable
institution approximately a month ago. The new owners are both Yeshiva graduates, Steven
having matriculated in 1987 and Daniel in 1995. The brothers recognized the growth potential of
the Washington Heights bakery, and soon thereafter became first time players in the food
industry game. Before purchasing Grandma's, the Brody's worked in the shop for a few weeks,
learning the ancient recipes and vowing "not to change one thing in the mouth-watering cookies

Hebrew Exemption Exams Terminated

The Jewish Studies Faculty has decided to stop administering the Hebrew and Jewish History
exemption tests to students of Yeshiva College and Sy Syms School of Business. Their decision
will take affect after the Spring Semester of 1999-2000. In a corollary decision, the faculty ruled
that the Yerushalmi, a Hebrew exam offered by the World Zionist Organization, may not be
taken after a student's sophomore year. Previously, early admissions freshmen could postpone
taking their exams until they were Juniors, after they returned from their year in Israel. Click for full story
Barak Declines Invitation to Hanukkah Dinner, Pataki to Keynote Fundraising Event by Commentator Staff
Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Barak has chosen to decline an invitation to receive an honorary
degree and present the keynote address at the reception following the Yeshiva University
Seventy-Fifth Annual Hanukkah Convocation in mid-December.Click for full story
