YU Golf Shoots Par

Jason Kollander

The last two tournaments that the Yeshiva Golf team has played have been as different as night and day. In the first match, the Macs were pitted against Montclair State, Centenary College, and Cabrini College. Beautiful weather and course conditions ruled the day, but the Macs did not. In the second tournament, as clouds were overcast and a slight breeze permeated the air, the Macs succeeded in clubbing their opponents.

Yeshiva entered the first meet reinvigorated by the return of co-Captain Josh Platt. Yeshiva was again at full strength, boasting a full slate of golfers, which included Michael Finkelstein, Josh Wilk, Joshua Dave Sisser, and Jason Kollander.

From the onset, Cabrini and Montclair proved to be the better teams, as they both raced out to a convincing lead. For the Macs, the challenge was to defeat Centenary College. Finkelstein shot the day's low for Yeshiva with a respectable 89. Platt, who shot a sub-par 50 on the front nine, pulled himself together and shot an incredible 40 on the extremely difficult back nine to end the day with a respectable 90.

The wet fairways and slow greens made the golfing very challenging for all competing golfers. The story of the day, however, was the 600-yard, par 5, 18th hole. From the 20 competing golfers, there were no birdies, pars were scarce, and bogeys and double-bogeys were rampant. After a hard fought day, the YU Macs forced a tie with Centenary College at 371 strokes for third place in the tournament.

On Wednesday, March 25, the YU golfing Macs teed off against Division III rival Stevens Tech. The match was held at the Macs home course, the Blue Hill golf course in Pearl River, New York.

This time the Macs had the home course advantage, which enabled Coach Allan Mittleman to play all team golfers in the tournament. Though only the five lowest scores would count, Coach Mittleman relished the opportunity to let his team improve their games by playing in actual game-like conditions. For this tournament, Stevens Tech only brought three golfers and under Division III regulations, Stevens Tech's worst score would have to count twice.

The Blue Hill course conditions were the best that the Macs have seen this season. The tee boxes were clean, fairways were dry, and the greens were true. Once again, Michael Finkelstein led all golfers with a tremendous 82. Co-Captain Josh Platt was second with an impressive 87. Josh Sisser shot his best round of the season with an admirable 91. Following a high 51 on the front, Josh Wilk stormed back to shoot a 43 on the back nine, for a total 94. Following a weak front nine by Jason Kollander, he turned it around with a strong 46 on the back. Other YU scores from that day include a pair of 96's by David Lichtman and Michael Klien, and Elly Goldenberg and Michael Levy both gave strong performances that impressed the Coach.

Stevens Tech golfers shot an 89, 97, and a 126 (which counted twice) in comparison to Yeshiva's recorded scores of 82, 87, 91, and 94. Coach Mittleman said this outing was his most successful this season, and he is very hopeful and cautiously optimistic about the Macs' upcoming match. In the Macs' season finale, they will visit SUNY Farmingdale at the renowned and revered Bethpage course.
