Under the guidance of Stanley Watson, the Yeshiva University Softball Intramural League celebrated Opening Day on Friday, April 20th. That morning, participants dusted off their gloves and dragged themselves out of bed after a tiring week of school to play the national pastime. Hopping into cars or taking the train, the players made their way to Van Cortlandt Park to meet up with their teammates for the new season.
The league is comprised of four teams, each consisting of thirteen players carefully selected by team captains Jon Minkove, Chananya Weissman, Menachem Weiss, and Alex "Gus" Traiman. Although the start of the season has been delayed due to both weather conditions and city maintenance of the fields, this year's season will still span four weeks including the playoffs, and the season will conclude on Friday, May 11th, when the league's championship game will be played.
What differentiates this league from other leagues is that this season provides each team with a doubleheader every Friday." While it can get tiring staying out there for a few hours in the sun, the desire to win keeps you out there for as long as you have to be," commented one participant.
This league not only gives its participants a chance to unwind after a hard week's work, but it also promotes teamwork. According to one YC junior, one of the league's primary attractions is the opportunity it provides to "meet new guys on the team all while having a good time."
The beauty of this league as opposed to the major leagues, is that all teams actually stand a chance at the season's beginning. The first week of play did not disappoint, as four close games were fought out on the field, with winners proclaiming invincibility and the losers vowing for revenge. While there was evidence of rustiness after a long winter offseason, some players felt this long stretch of inactivity had no bearing on their performance One slugger summed up this sentiment, "I felt really good out there. It's great to be back."
