Last Thursday, Sy Syms Student Council conducted the Silber Professor of the Year Award Elections. The three candidates were chosen based on the numbers of nominations that were received for any professors. The candidates this year were Professors Aaron Brown, Robert Greenberg, and Charles Snow. Dr. Avi Rosenfeld received such a significant amount of nominations that he too was placed on the ballot as a special mention. The winner will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on May 1st.
Though only one winner will emerge from these elections, it was nice to see how many professors were nominated. Nearly every professor in every area received at least one nomination. It became quite clear that just about every student was able to find a teacher that best suits his needs. I've often heard complaints that there are not enough classes offered or that there are too few "good" teachers, but I think that almost without exception, all of the faculty here are "good" in their own way for a certain type of student. Some professors cater to the students who are looking for the more practical approach, while others are looking for a more academic approach. Some professors conduct a rigid classroom, while others sessions are a bit, well, undefined. The point that I am trying to make is that it is exciting to note the wide variety of professors that teach here at Sy Syms and the plethora of opportunities that we have as a result of that variety.
It has often been said that "picking your classes" will define your success at Yeshiva. Well, we see that picking your teachers is a part of that too. The SSSB Student Council has been working on a web site which we hope to have up by the next registration that will help you "pick your teachers." I wish you all a Chag Kosher VeSameach.
