Beyond Words

Today, editorial pages around the world will undertake the valiant effort to provide some semblance of perspective, or consolation, or resolve, or direction – something, some sort of meaningful response to yesterday’s events. We tried to do the same. We couldn’t. Yesterday’s images kept flooding into our minds. Along with these adjectives: Despicable. Abhorrent. Depressing. Horrific. Insane. Abominable. Tragic. Hateful. Odious. Repugnant. Deranged. Wicked. Atrocious. Repellent. Revulsive. Deplorable. Disgusting. Revolting. Villainous. Debased. Shameful. Pitiful. Sinful. Ignoble. Sordid. Contemptible. Invidious. Craven. Nauseating. Wretched. Perverted. Degenerate. Disastrous. Rotten. Vicious. Sickening. Vile. Corrupt. Depraved. Gross. Obscene. Demented. Loathsome. Offensive. Repulsive. Outrageous. Horrid. Malevolent. Criminal. Twisted. Putrid. Detestable. Cowardly. Evil. Deadly…

How To Help

The magnitude of yesterday’s catastrophe has left all of us in a surreal state of shock, and the temptation to remain fixated by ongoing news developments is great. But there are a few practical things we can do to assist in the relief effort. Give blood. Make a donation to the Red Cross – they accept credit card donations - to help fund supplies for victims. Anyone with medical expertise of any kind is encouraged to contact public health officials and find out where his services are most needed. (See below for contact information for these relief projects, courtesy of MSNBC). In addition, we should write letters to Congress urging the American government to maintain a firm stance against perpetrators of global terrorism and their sponsors. As Rabbi Lamm advised in his Tuesday address, we must actively insist that America protect itself and its allies, especially Israel, against the threat of terror. And of course, we should pray. “Rabbi Chanina…says, ‘Pray for the welfare of the government, because if people do not fear it, a person would swallow his fellow alive.’ ” (Pirkei Avos 3:2)
