Speech Given by Yeshiva College Student Council President Lou Shapp at Rally

Today, September 11, 2001- a date which will live in infamy-the United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by air and land forces of terrorists, probably Islamic militants.

The United States had proclaimed neutrality towards the Palestinian people. Indeed, it has thought naively that the problems of another democratic nation, Israel, 6,000 miles away where not of significance to the United States. We have tried to see both sides in the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, now we realize the error of our ways. We have been hiding our head in the sand too long.

It should be noted that the distance from the Middle East to the United States makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Arab peoples have deliberately sought to deceive the United States with false statements, expressions of hope for continued relations, and propaganda.

Today's attack has caused severe damage to many governmental and historical buildings that are at the heart of American life. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American planes have been reported to have been high-jacked. Indeed, the threat of war lingers on our very home front.

As Jews we have sat and watch while CNN, ABC, NBC, the New York Times, and people around us have biasedly reported on the current conflict in Israel. Now as American Jews we have come to a climatic point in our history where we can finally say the best interests of America and of the Israel nation is to recognize that waiting and watching is no longer the answer. To all the victims of terrorism and sadness, our hearts here and feelings are truly with you during this trying time. The time to act has come and it is now. No longer must we hide our face and shun the notion of action. WE must fight with words, pray with reverence for Shalom Al Yisrael. And learn with devotion in a new profound way that will ensure us a brighter tomorrow. It is no coincidence that this tragedy took place during Parshas Neetzavim. It says' "Atem Neetzaveem HAYOM Culchem", menaing "You are all standing TODAY as one". Let us take the message of this weeks sedra to heart; just like everyone, from all circles and backrounds came together as one, so must we as well become one in this great time of sorrow. Thank you.
