No one said it would be easy. But we, as a student body are bouncing back with exceptional energy and boundless ambition. This month of Cheshvan has been one of several mixed feelings and emotions. Unfortunately, our yeshiva and Am Yisrael have lost 2 great Gadolim in our time, Rav Ahron Soloveichik and Rav Menachem Shach. Although I was not particularly close to Rav Ahron, I had the Zechus to learn just a few feet away from him in the Bais Medrash on a daily basis. One could always be sure to see Rav Ahron sitting right next to the Aron Kodesh, always catering to all the questions of the Talmidim and Baalei Habatim. I only recently discovered that while he was not in the healthiest condition, even in his final days, Rav Ahron continued to fly from Chicago to New York on a weekly basis to grace us with his Chachmah and Hashpa'ah. Although Rav Ahron and Rav Shach are no longer with us physically, their vast wisdom and powerful influence will truly be foreverlasting.
On the positive side of things, this month at Yeshiva has sure been a busy one and exciting one as well. What a privilege it was to have Yosef Karduner here on the Y.U. campus. Anyone who was there will vouch that it was a real inspiring night. What was unique about it to many was not only the music and midnight buffet, but the Achdus and camaraderie that was so prevalent that night. To see students from all learning programs and backgrounds have their arms on each other's shoulders singing Shir Hamaalot made the whole night worthwhile. Prepare for many more pop-up music stars in the future because if there's one thing everyone enjoys at Yeshiva, it's a rocking concert and a full feast.
Anyone not hear the words of Nervus Circus being chanted throughout the campus? Sometimes I wonder what's more fun; the event itself, or the 2 weeks of anticipation leading up to it. But this event was one that surely lived up to its name. The Coney Island Freak show undoubtedly left its mark on all those present. And I commend the student body for successfully keeping their appetite all through the show, in order to indulge in the deli-Sub feast. Yasher Koach to all those who made the event as Nervus as it was. Special Hakaras Hatov goes to the Office of Student Services, Maintenance, Food Services for sincerely putting in all their Koach to produce such a great night, and Housekeeping.
It seems like one party after another. Right after Nervus Circus, we went into a World Series Extravaganza. Who said Y.U. is empty on Sunday nights? The hotdogs, popcorn, and cotton candy seemed to make for an authentic World Series party. I even overheard people at the party in Morg Lounge saying, "We've got hotdogs, popcorn, cotton candy and soda. It's like being at the game without having to shell out 200 bucks!" The Yankees may have lost, but at least everyone left the game satiated.
Then there was Shabbos with Rabbi Asher Wade. Ezra Berenholz hasn't wasted any time enhancing Shabbos at Y.U. It is amazing how comfortable Rabbi Wade felt when he came to Y.U. I commend the students on an exceptional turnout and response. It is one thing to have a great Rav speak at Yeshiva. But to hear words of Torah from someone who used to be a Priest is also quite moving. If I had to pick one word to describe our Asher Wade Shabbos, it would be Chizuk. We should only be zoche to host many more influential figures at Yeshiva.
It is also great to see the clubs on their way. Shabbatons and trips are posted all over campus. Panim is off to Delaware and the Canadian Club is spearheading a Ranger game. The Persian club is preparing for a trip to Washington and the MIS club is stirring up revolutionary ideas. The political groups on campus bring local politicians to speak and the literacy program is recruiting new tutors. The chesed club is never ending and the Israel club is busier than ever. I encourage all students to get involved in clubs or to even go for just a meeting. You never know what may tickle your taste buds.
So what's in store for the upcoming month, you may ask. Chanukah is right around the corner and we adore any opportunity to have a great time. Due to excessive popular demand, the infamous Chanukasino is making a comeback to the Y.U. grounds. The event is exactly how it sounds. On top of bringing authentic gaming to our University, we're topping it off by featuring the musically acclaimed band of Reva L'Sheva. That's' right! All the way from Eretz Yisrael. This extravagant event will be Thursday night, November 29th. Don't miss it!
The annual Chanukah concert is going to be out of control. We put together an unsurpassed lineup of the hottest Jewish stars today. Avraham Fried and Shalsheles. Need one say more? The Chanuka concert staff, led by Josh Kramer have been tirelessly preparing the ultimate Y.U. concert and are anticipating a show of true excellence and entertainment. Tickets are on sale, so buy them now so you ensure you have the seat you want. December 13th, will surely light up your Chanukah in a Mehadrin Min Hamehadrin way!
Also during the week of December 9th will be the YC Dramatics Society's production of The Island of Dr. Moreau, tickets will be going on sale soon.
I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to stay safe during this time of difficulty and concern. I encourage all students to acknowledge YU security often as well as the local police officers, and the national guardsmen when you see them throughout the city. Remember that Yeshiva security has a toll free number (888-YU-SAFTY) and be wary and cautious at all times.
So it looks like we will all have our hands full this month. The great Aristotle once said, "Happiness is the state of activity." So I guess its safe to say that we can look forward to month full of Simcha and Joy.
And please get your information into The Guide before it is too late, you don't want to be left out.
Good Luck on Midterms!!!
