Led by the Sophomore Class Student Councils from the Wilf and Midtown campuses, Yeshiva's undergraduates enjoyed a day of fun in the snow at the Camelback Ski Area on Sunday, February 10. Sixty men and close to 35 women attended the event, which turned out to be a huge success. In fact, many on the men's campus had to be turned away in the week before due to such a large turnout. "The ski trip let the students get school off their mind, make some new friends, and have a chilled out time at a YU event," explained Sophomore Class Vice President Aaron Heller.
Even though it had not snowed in Tannersville, Pennsylvania for over a month, those in attendance were greeted with optimal ski conditions when they arrived, with all but one lift not in operation that day. The skiers and snow boarders had close to six hours of uninterrupted access to the trails until it started to rain and the resort started closing down different sections of the mountains. Even then many remained on the mountain and tried to get in as much of the rain as they were permitted to before the lifts were turned off. As Syms Sophomore Jon Perl put it, "Despite adverse conditions, the ski trip was awesome nonetheless."
The trip also offered snow tubing, which had an expected large number of responses from the Stern side but a less than satisfactory response from the Yeshiva College group in the trip. In fact, as the busses pulled away Sunday morning, only two Yeshiva men had signed up for tubing, while twelve Stern women hit the tube area. "I don't think that the other guys realized how much fun tubing would be," said YC Freshman Gershon Ferstendig. "It was one of the best decisions I made all day, besides what kind of bagel to have for lunch." Sophomore Class Secretary/Treasurer Steven A. Weg added, "Snow tubing at Camelback is something that I won't forget for a while. We had a great tubing with little kids from all over the Northeast."
The trip was subsidized greatly by the Yeshiva College Student Council and the Stern College for Women Student Council. Besides paying for bagels for lunch, the councils provided a coach bus and lift tickets for all those attending. The men were also treated to pizza at Time Out when their bus returned home. President of the Sophomore Class Matthew Zimmelman also noted it that Food Services was supposed to provide lunch for all of the students on the trip but at the last minute became. "It would be nice to have Food Services return my calls but I would like to thank Time Out for coming through at the last minute. I want to thank Aaron and Shlomo for all their help and to [SCW Sophomore Class President] Miriam Khavarani for taking care of everything on the Stern end."
The Sophomore Class Student Council plans on organizing more events throughout the semester and is confident that the response will be even better than it was for this semester. They would like to thank Lou Shapp and Avi Rosman for their help in the behind the scenes aspects of planning the trip.
