Arts Festival Exhibits Wide Array of Styles

This year’s Arts Festival featured nine events over two weeks in February. Hundreds attended the various concerts, galleries, performances and readings. For the first time, the Arts Festival presented films made independently by Yeshiva students. Another first was the poetry reading in the Yeshiva area’s newest kosher eatery, Kaffeine. “I was very pleased with the Festival this year,” commented Co-Director Beth Shapiro, “and I hope that students will step up so that this can keep on going next year.”

The Opening Concert featured the usual mix of new and old Yeshiva bands, including the Jason Caplan Quartet, Headspace, Peach Fuzz and The Glazer Trio. The Jazz and Classical Concert featured Yeshiva College’s Jazz Ensemble and assorted other acts.

The Festival included two visual arts events. At the first, a display of hand-made art, student paintings, sculptures and drawings was presented. The second, focusing on art created through a secondary medium, featured photography, digital art, and an interactive feature in which students had the opportunity to incorporate color prints of the first gallery’s art in the construction of new artworks.

The poetry reading at Kaffeine was the first Arts Festival event to be held outside of Yeshiva facilities. It featured more than twenty student poets and free Kaffeine pastries provided by the Yeshiva College Deans’ Office. The prose reading took place in the Ivry Student Center, with plenty of sushi for all in attendance.

The drama event, organized primarily by Rami Cohen and Alana Sher, featured student films and performances.

The Arts Festival has now completed its sixth year, and its fourth year in which Stern students were included.
