Unquotable Quotes
To the Editors:
It is a generally assumed maxim that authors refrain from
quoting themselves in “objective” news articles; that rite is generally
reserved for the editorial section. I
was therefore perturbed and disconcerted to see that Shlomo Weg (Steven A. Weg)
concluded that to quote himself in an article which he penned is acceptable
(Issue 8, “Sophomores Take to the Slopes”).
Both the writer as well as the editorial staff have shown poor judgment
in allowing such a quote to be included in the article.
It is disreputable and deplorable to see that Mr. Weg is quoting himself,
but what is even more disturbing is his attempt to deceive the reader by using
two distinct names. For a
“venerable” university newspaper which prides itself on upholding academic
standards, your journalistic integrity is now coming into question.
