From the SSSBSA President: Gabriel Jacobson

Welcome back to all of the previous and incoming Yeshiva University students. I hope that your summer was fun, relaxing, and successful.

As we enter into the academic year with new challenges, we must focus on situations that surround students. The American economy is struggling, and it is difficult to enter the workforce.

Despite these hard times Americans are prosperous and American currency is still a valuable asset.  As students, we are planning to enter a business world where employers are nervous about the economy’s future, reluctant to hire new employees, and are actively downsizing.

In a conversation with an employee from Swift, a financial integration company, he noted that where the company is downsizing, it is also replacing their sluggish workers with more vibrant new faces. The company is able to do this because of the struggling market. People are forced to take salary cuts and work for companies that they may not have considered previously.  Therefore companies have the upper hand and are using to acquire polished employees.

Many YU undergraduates are worried whether they will receive job offers upon completion of their education. For some students, it has been harder than others. There have been less internship slots available, translating into less job opportunities. This leaves many students asking themselves what – if any – job offers they will receive upon graduation.

As the President of the Sy Syms School of Business Student Association, current students should rest assured there will be frequent guest speakers, continual events, and several programs to help students plan, focus, and steer their career path. It is the school’s visions to assist students to secure their professional future. I am enthusiastic and excited entering the academic new year, as the events planned are assured to help every student capitalize on his growth potential.
