A Newspaper Apologizes

Newspaper staffers are generally not inclined to apologize. Fancying themselves the guardians of truth, they stubbornly defend even arbitrary formulations against all charges of sloppiness or bias. Furthermore, the rotating nature of this newspaper’s staff would, at first glance, render a statement of contrition merely an implicit stab at the integrity of departed editors. What was said, it would appear, must remain forever on the books.
