Letters To the
Editor
An Open Letter
to Zack Streit
By Professor Gabriel Cwilich
I read your column in the last issue of The
Commentator, and it has worried me deeply.
Let me begin by saying that, because I have been
living for the last four months outside the United States, I am unfamiliar
with the exact nature and characteristics of the note that Professor
Schrecker and her colleagues at Stern signed in the New York Times
beyond what you mention about it in your column, but that I consider that
point irrelevant to the nature of my concerns...
Rosh Hashanah Letter
In recalling last years horrifying events, which ravaged America,
sometimes it is difficult to palpably relive our true emotions.
Our thought, deeds, and even emotions might simultaneously be
contradictory at various points throughout the long trauma.
In writing a Rosh Hashanah letter and email to friends last year, I
tried to blend the true essence of what was transpiring around humanity at
that moment and somehow engage a positive yet struggling inspiration from
the horrendous events...
Housing Issue
I am writing this letter, not as a "letter to the editor",
rather as an idea for a front-page article for the first issue in next
year's publication. This is a pressing issue and deserves the press to let
the public know about it. Here it is. Many students - including YC, SSSB,
and especially RIETS students desire to live "on campus". Why
commute from Queens or Teaneck when you can live across the street? This
phenomenon is only a few years old and B"H there are roughly 75
couples living here in the heights. But, there is a problem. There is a
shortage of apartments in the area (or at least a shortage of safe and
clean apartments in the area) and many students are unfortunately being
turned away by the university and have to look somewhere else to live,
what a shame. I know from my experiences as a student, spending shabbos on
campus was always more enjoyable when I was invited for a meal at a
couples’ apartment. I have been told by guests that visiting my
apartment is relaxing and a nice change of atmosphere...
