Syms Orientation by Yoel D.
Kelman Wednesday,
Ocotber 9th - Sy Syms students from both the Wilf and Midtown campus
flocked to Weissberg Commons tonight for the annual Sy Syms School of
Business Orientation. The
evening featured addresses from deans and students as well as a chance to
peruse the numerous clubs scattered at tables throughout the room. Upon arrival,
students received packets that included information about clubs, meeting
with deans, the tutoring program, and a ten percent discount coupon for
Dougie's. Students were then directed to the tables spread about the room,
enabling them to talk to the various club representatives in attendance. Shortly after
8:00 pm, by which time most students had arrived, the formal part of the
orientation began. Midtown
SSSB President Ellie Nyer kicked off the speeches by discussing business
opportunities for students and the uniqueness of a Sy Syms education. The
next speech, given by SSSBSA President Gabriel Jacobson, was pointed and
terse:Jacobson introduced himself, welcomed the students, and introduced
Dean Snow. Snow spoke
about the benefits of Sy Syms and Yeshiva University. Sy Syms, Snow
declared, is unique in that its deans are easily accessible, a quality
lacking in most other universities. The
Dean’s words were encouraging and appreciated by all. He told students
to "work hard and, although it may be tempting, do not take the easy
way out, because the school has a lot to offer and you should get
everything there is to get out of it." After Dean
Snow's motivating words, Dean Jaskoll, the
Assistant Dean of Sy Syms, was introduced to speak about one of his
primary influences on the school, the Office of Placement and Career
Services. "We have had a
lot of success in finding seniors job placement," boasted Jaskoll
about OPCS. He went on to
remark that OPCS has been successful in finding jobs as well as summer
internships for many students. After the
speeches, the students we able to meet the deans and the student body
presidents, and clubs re-opened their tables to recruit students. Students
were also privy to a surprise gift; plastic thermos mugs that had the Sy
Syms Business School Student Council logo imprinted on it. One Syms
student who found the event particularly useful noted, “the event was
very well organized. Having just entered the school, I now have a much
better understanding of what I should be doing over the next couple of
years. The free mugs were nice too!”
