A Message from the SSSBSA President
by Gabe Jacobson

One of the most important aspects of a business school education is getting a job once we graduate. It can be frustrating, and at times, even discouraging, when challenges and obstacles stand in our way. A few years ago, the economy was booming, with firms practically begging us at our doorsteps to work for them. Times, however, have unfortunately changed dramatically. We are now in an economic era where firms are limiting the amount of people interviewed.

Sy Syms Orientation
by Yoel D. Kelman

Sy Syms School of Business students from both the Wilf and Midtown Campuses flocked to Weissberg Commons on the evening of Wednesday, October 9th for the annual SSSB orientation.  The evening featured addresses from deans and students as well as a chance to peruse the numerous clubs advertised at tables lining the room.

J.P. Morgan Chase Rep Discusses Job Skills
by David Zarmi

Judah Kaplan, Vice President of Sales and Training at J.P. Morgan-Chase, spoke at Yeshiva recently in the latest of a series of Office of Placement and Career Services seminars on finding jobs in the current market.  As a Sy Syms School of Business alumnus, Kaplan has an inside knowledge of the average SSSB student’s skills and needs, and, as a high-ranking employee at a large financial firm, he knows what companies are looking for.

Sy Syms Student Body Strikes Out
by Aryeh Leichter

Seven students attended a question and answer session with Dr. Charles Snow, Dean of the Sy Syms School of Business, on Monday, October 14th. Seven students. There were four questions in all, the most important of which remained unasked: What happened to the Sy Syms student body? Dean Snow exhibited a slide illustrating the growth of Sy Syms over the past three years, from under 700 students in 2000 to 728 men and women this year. Seven people saw it.

Let’s Go Crazy!
by Reuben Rosenberg

Quizzes. Tests. Reports.  Midterms. They're enough to drive anyone crazy.  And on the night of October 29th, Yeshiva students were no exception.  In an attempt to help the student body relax (both mentally and physically) during this stressful time of year, the American Marketing Association and Advertizing Society Club, both of the Sy Syms School of Business, co-sponsored a presentation of the film “Crazy People” as well as a free meal of pizza from Grandma's Cookie Jar, a local dairy eatery, and some soda and popcorn...

Managing a Restaurant
by Elad Cnaan

When people consider opening a small business, they often overlook many of the responsibilities and challenges involved.  Indeed, thousands of small businesses close annually – within a year of opening – due to inexperience and poor management. Whether they open a chain franchise or start an independent freestanding eatery, owners often fail because of the tricky nature of managing such enterprises.  Franchises are the easier of the two to run and control, but still demand good management, which is the key to the success of any business.

Syms Graduates Place Well Despite Shaky Economy
by Michael Rosner

My last article, discussing the current job market and how students are faring this year, generated a lot of feedback. Students voiced concern about procuring jobs given the economic slump and were interested in the success rate of their peers last year under the same circumstances.
