Morgan Chase Rep Discusses Job Skills by David Zarmi Judah
Kaplan, Vice President of Sales and Training at J.P. Morgan-Chase, spoke
at Yeshiva recently in the latest of a series of Office of Placement and
Career Services seminars on finding jobs in the current market.
As a Sy Syms School of Business alumnus, Kaplan has an inside
knowledge of the average SSSB student’s skills and needs, and, as a
high-ranking employee at a large financial firm, he knows what companies
are looking for. Since
the OPCS has had difficulties in finding positions for Yeshiva students
due to the current job market, Kaplan spoke of some of the skills required
to succeed in the business world. Titled “How to Find a Job,” Kaplan's
presentation stressed that the most important part of choosing a career is
selecting a job that interests the student. While
most of the audience consisted of Finance majors, there were also students
majoring in Economics, Accounting, and MIS, among others, in attendace.
A small number of students from Stern College for Women also came
to the lecture. Kaplan
began his speech by emphasizing the importance of social networking.
“There isn’t an alumnus or alumna I know who won’t accept a phone
call from a student asking for some of their time to discuss the field
they’re interested in,” he said. He urged students to use the Jewish
community and their synagogues to their advantage, and to even ask rabbis
for help if necessary. He
then discussed résumés, explaining that they should be viewed as
marketing documents for each potential employer.
“Everything on the résumé should add value,” he said. He also
encouraged listing a hobby or interest in which the student is proficient
and being prepared to discuss it. Kaplan
encouraged any and all students looking for help in finding a job to
contact him, asserting that he wants to be “flooded with phone calls and
e-mails.” Judah Kaplan can
