A Message from the SSSBSA President

Gabe Jacobson

One of the most important aspects of a business school education is getting a job once we graduate. It can be frustrating, and at times, even discouraging, when challenges and obstacles stand in our way.

A few years ago, the economy was booming, with firms practically begging us at our doorsteps to work for them. Times, however, have unfortunately changed dramatically. We are now in an economic era where firms are limiting the amount of people interviewed.

It is therefore incumbent upon each of us to take initiative in this difficult time. As students in Sy Syms, we have a unique advantage. There are many graduates – both recent and veteran – who have been successful in their professional careers. They would take pride in aiding and abetting any of us in our job hunt. But it is our responsibility to seek them out and ask their guidance. We should not wait to enter the business world when we graduate, but rather during our academic tenure.

In a recent conversation with a successful Sy Syms graduate, it was mentioned that only one student had contacted him, asking for guidance on where to proceed after graduation. The graduates take pride in their alma mater, and would use every available means, to ensure that we – their successors – thrive in all of our endeavors.

As students in one of the most difficult economic times in recent history, it is our obligation, perhaps more so than ever, to do everything in our power to secure a job upon graduating. When we take the initiative, the firms will take interest. And when the firms take interest, our job hunt will start to flourish.  It’s that simple.

On a personal note, I invite all Sy Syms students to come talk to me about anything at all. I hope that I can be a source of assistance, guidance, and leadership to all students, anytime and anywhere.¨
