Rules and Guidelines: 1. Essays must be about Albert Camus’s The Plague, and can approach the book from any perspective, be it personal, critical, thematic, philosophical, or theological. The tone may be formal or informal. However, the bulk of your essay must, in some way, relate to the themes, structure, plot, historical context, or characters of the book. 2. Essays will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity, and clarity and eloquence of thought and expression, by a committee of Commentator editors and staff members, as well as members of the English department faculty. 3. Essays must not exceed 2000 words. Aside from this condition, there is no minimum recommended length. 4. Only one entry per person will be accepted. 5. Contest is open to all full-time students enrolled in Yeshiva College or the Sy Syms School of Business (on the Wilf Campus only), excluding all Commentator staff members and editors. 6. Essays must be submitted via email to CommieCamus@aol.com as a Microsoft Word file attachment. Essays should be double-spaced and typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1” margins and the pages numbered. YOUR NAME SHOULD NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE ON THE ESSAY. Instead, in the body of the email accompanying the file attachment, type your name, address, phone number, class standing (e.g. upper freshman, lower sophomore, upper junior, etc.), and the name of the school (Yeshiva College or Sy Syms) in which you are enrolled. Also be sure to let us know the best way to reach you. 7. All essays are due before midnight on MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2003. All entrants will be notified via email regarding the status of their submissions by the end of February. Winners may be notified by phone as well. 8. Essays will not be critiqued. Prizes are not negotiable and may not be exchanged. The decisions of the judges are final. 9. Failure to adhere to any of the above rules and guidelines may result in the automatic disqualification of the entrant’s submission.
