New Soccer Intramural Program to
Begin Next Term Soccer fever will invade Yeshiva next semester. Sophomore Jonathan Schaechter, a member of the Yeshiva soccer team, has organized an extracurricular sports league that will allow student soccer lovers to play a competitive yet leisurely style of soccer. Schaechter said that he knew the idea has been thought of before but he wanted to make it a reality. “A lot of people have talked about forming a league and shown interest in it, but I wanted to do it,” he said. Each team will field six players at one time, including a goalie. Games will take place on Thursday nights between nine and eleven at night. All participants will receive official Intramural t-shirts. The structure of the league will center on a round robin tournament for the first few weeks. As the season progresses, the league will seed teams based on their performances during the early stages of the season. An elimination tournament will then take place, leaving, in the end, one team declared champions of the league. The idea came to Schaechter after a somewhat disappointing soccer season for the YU team. “We played fairly well this season considering all,” he said. “Still, some people have asked to have a club to practice more.” In addition to having members of the team participate, he hopes to see other students forming their own teams. “I encourage people to get friends and to make a team,” he said. YU already has a successful nightly basketball league in which more than 70 students partake. Schaechter hopes that, over time, the soccer league will become as popular as the basketball league. “We want to recognize that soccer has the biggest interest next to basketball,” he said. “If it works out well, I would like to see it continue to run through further semesters.” Students can sign up for the YU intramural soccer league at jontsch105@hotmail.com ♦ What do you think?
