The Guide Part II and New Features on YUStudents.org to Debut This Month
by Yehonatan Gross

Capping a six-month wait, The Guide Part II, a directory of Yeshiva students, will be printed and released within the next few weeks.  According to Gennady Gelman, the Guide’s editor and a Yeshiva College senior, the Guide was given to the printers just before winter break.

Last year, Part II was never released in print, and was substituted with an Adobe Acrobat computer file.  This semester, the main reason for the delay has been a lack of input from the student body.  The costs of printing the directory could not be justified until information was available on approximately eight hundred students.  Last year this number was never reached, and this year it was only fulfilled around the beginning of finals during the fall semester.

Future editions of the Guide, however, should not have this problem, according to Gelman.  The Guide’s staff has received permission from the Yeshiva administration to use the school’s own housing databases, so that at least a name and room number of all Yeshiva students will be available.  This fall, all students will have only 3 weeks to edit this information, which will require the input of phone numbers, home addresses, and summer contact information.  After this deadline, the Guide should be printed immediately, so that it will be available for reference shortly thereafter.

With the Guide unprinted, the main way to find student contact information has been through the Internet, via www.yustudents.org.  This site, run by the Yeshiva University Computer Society, now also includes a number for their new phone directory.  1-800-555-TELL (8355) has a voice command menu system that can lead students to the directory.

Other features designed to make life more convenient to students at Yeshiva also will arrive on YUStudent.org in the near future. The Offices of the Dean at both Yeshiva College and Sy Syms School of Business have agreed to post class cancellations on the site.  The webmasters also hope to post a list of lost and found materials at Yeshiva, as well as an online store in which students will be able to purchase Yeshiva merchandise.  Until now, such merchandise was only available at Yeshiva’s pop-up bookstores at the beginning of each semester. ¨
